Herod Families,
First and foremost, I hope that everyone is healthy and safe. I have been thinking of you all non-stop these past few days and know that I am here to support you all through these next few weeks. I want to thank you for your patience as we navigate these very unsure waters when it comes to educating our children for this month and through the beginning of April. I have had several meetings with district leadership and we are working together to come up with some solutions that I think you will be excited about.
As far as instruction goes, there will be an online platform for our students to use to access the district curriculum. The platform is called HISD @ H.O.M.E and will go live on Monday, March 23rd.
Through HISD @ H.O.M.E., online student-directed lessons will be provided by content and grade level. Students can access the digital curriculum available through HISD @ H.O.M.E. with computers, laptops, tablets, iPads, and smartphones. Instruction will be available online as follows:
- Week of March 23: Students will be able to log in and interact with the digital resources
- Week of March 30: Curriculum-based lessons and activities will go live
Webinars will be held to assist parents with accessing digital instructional materials. The webinar schedule will be announced soon.
We understand that some families may not have access to the internet or devices readily available to use. Beginning the week of March 23, teachers will reach out to families to determine each student’s needs regarding access to digital curriculum. This will assist campuses in determining the number of paper-based curriculum resources they will need to produce and provide to families. As far as Herod’s communication with our students, I am working with Herod teachers to figure out how daily communication will work, so more details regarding all of this information will be forthcoming in the next few days. Teachers will also supplement the online materials and push out more details regarding Herod’s instruction at this time as well.
The week of March 23rd is considered professional development for our teachers. (Please keep in mind that we are all coming back from Spring Break and time is definitely needed to make plans for the next few weeks of instruction.) We look forward to online instruction beginning on Monday, March 30th. This will give the teachers the time to navigate the online platform HISD has chosen for us to use, and also give teachers time to lesson plan and contact individual families.
To keep our Herod school spirit strong through all of this, I have created a virtual school spirit week where kids can participate in the daily challenge and post their spirit online or email to their teachers. The spirit week form will be posted on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/HerodElementarySchool/) and teachers will push this out to their students via email and their grade-level communication systems starting on Monday. I also have that image posted in this email so that you can start planning your virtual Herod Spirit!!
I realize that there are many questions right now. Please know that this will not be perfect and that we are working very hard to get all the correct information to you and your kids so that we can minimize the gap in student learning during this time. Please be patient, understanding, and flexible as we work together to do what we know is best for kids.
The thing I love the most about our Herod community is the ability to rally together when needed, and I have no doubt that we will come out from all of this stronger than ever.

Field Day: Tomorrow
Tomorrow’s field day will be closed to parents and other visitors. Adults who have already signed up to volunteer will be screened by the nurse. Also, tomorrow will be a free dress day for students. We encourage students to dress appropriately for field day activities. Thank you for your understanding.
