COVID-19 Update from Principal Turek

Dear parents:

I recognize that the Coronavirus is on the forefront of our minds and know that we have been working diligently here at Herod to ensure not only that classrooms are clean, but that teachers have what they need to maintain a clean environment. I know you have questions regarding what our district is doing to keep our kids and staff safe. District principals were called in earlier yesterday for a meeting specific to this topic and I am going to share with you what I know as of today. Also, Dr. Lathan also sent out this information in an email yesterday.

Per the district, to keep our campus healthy and to ensure minimal community traffic, Herod will be a “CLOSED campus” beginning, March 23rd through April 3rd.

WHAT DOES A CLOSED CAMPUS LOOK LIKE?

  • No parent conferences will be held unless they are held over the phone.
  • No visitors will be allowed on campus for lunch.
  • No parent volunteers.
  • No deliveries of any kind for students (this includes lunch, forgotten homework, water bottles, etc.) Please send your child’s packed lunch to school with them- no food deliveries will be permitted.
  • Previously scheduled ARDs, 504s and IAT meetings will be held as scheduled; however, meetings will take place in the front office with no additional access to the campus.

WHAT DOES A CLOSED CAMPUS LOOK LIKE FOR NON-CAMPUS PERSONNEL?

  • All student teachers, substitutes, hourly lecturers, vendors, contract employees, and other district-related visitors must be screened by an HISD nurse before they can be allowed access to the campus.

POST SPRING BREAK TRAVEL SURVEY

  • All HISD employees and students will receive a questionnaire upon their return from Spring Break regarding all types of travel.
  • Please fill out the student travel form in its entirety and return it to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. (The form will continue to come home until it is filled out.) This form will go home on Monday, March 23rd.
  • All HISD employees, students, and families who have traveled or are planning to must register their travel plans using the HISD Travel Reporting Form. This form must be completed no later than Friday, March 27, 2020. (A printable form is available at www.houstonisd.org/HealthAlerts.

POST SPRING BREAK ACTIVITIES

  • All scheduled events from March 23 – April 3 have been canceled.
    • This includes but not limited to International Night, all community meetings such as girl/boy scouts, GT/Scholars Expo, PTO Events, Coffee with the Principal.
  • We will continue to run our extended day and enrichment programs, following the above guidelines.

IN CONCLUSION

  • The front lobby area of the building is for drop-off/picking up only- please do not linger in the lobby to watch your child walk to class. Please drop off and leave our lobby area free and clear. When you pick your child up, please exit the building and hold any conversations with other parents, students, etc. outside the building.
  • Please continue to check the district’s health update page (https://www.houstonisd.org/HealthAlerts) for updates regarding the Coronavirus and the impact on schools.
  • Be sure to continue to show your children the proper way to wash their hands and cover their coughs and sneezes, and please keep them home if they are feeling sick.
  • All mentioned measures are being put into place for the wellbeing of our kids and our staff. Please help us by following these procedures, beginning March 23rd.
  • When we get closer to April 3rd, we will be able to communicate more about what our procedures will look like after this timeline.

Thank you for your understanding.

Kind regards,

Principal Michelle Turek

Queridos padres:

Saludos cordiales,

Directora Michelle Turek
